A total of 189 gas stations in Spain would be completely vulnerable to a cyberattack. This is how bluntly the Mediterranean Association of ICT Experts has communicated in its complaint to the European Commission and the Environmental Prosecutor's Office.
Fuel tanks have certain security measures and monitoring software that can be reviewed and configured remotely by technicians, but a poor security configuration in these devices would give a cybercriminal free rein to do whatever they wanted. Of all the tanks located, only 1 had password protection.
Entre las acciones disponibles por vía remota se encuentran: modificar las propiedades del combustible, verter el sobrante fuera del tanque e, even, modificar la temperatura y presión interna del depósito. Algo terriblemente grave que podría ocasionar un grave incidente que llegaría a afectar a las vidas de las personas.
Pero este grave problema no sólo afecta a España, si no que estaría sucediendo en todos los países de Europa, así como América, Asia, Australia, Oriente Medio y, en menor medida, África.
