The State Department is going to make a proposal for applicants for U.S. visas to be investigated based on their behavior on social media, in addition to their emails and travel history from the last five years. The proposal, which must be approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB, por sus siglas en inglés), would require that most immigrant and nonimmigrant visa applicants list on a federal form all social media identities they have used in the past five years. This information will be used to screen and identify them and would affect about 14,7 millions of people each year.

Previously, this social media information was only required when a more rigorous national security investigation needed to be carried out.

Now, if the proposal is approved, applicants will also be required to provide phone numbers from the past five years, as well as international travel history, if you have family members involved in terrorist acts, or if we have been deported or expelled from another country.
