Europeans, from now on, will have to spend some extra money when buying a smartphone with Google's services integrated, which until now were free and already included in the cost of said smartphone.

For the first time, Google has announced its plans to charge European Android phone manufacturers who wish to include a free version of Google apps on their Android phones.

In short, Android phone manufacturers will now have to pay Google to install the Play Store, Gmail, YouTube, Maps and Chrome, which are generally considered core parts of the Android operating system, but in reality they are Google services.

“Since the pre-installation of Google Search and Chrome along with our other apps helped us fund the development and free distribution of Android, we will introduce a new paid licensing agreement for smartphones and tablets shipped to the EEA. Android will remain free and open.”, Google said in a blog post.

This policy change comes in response to this summer's European Commission decision, which fined Google a record antitrust penalty of 5.000 million dollars for abusing the dominance of its mobile operating system Android and stifling competitors.

Google invested billions of dollars to create the Android operating system and spends millions to maintain the project. To keep its mobile operating system open source and free, Google asks device manufacturers to pre-install a set of popular Google apps that generate revenue for the company.
