A group of hackers has hijacked tens of thousands of Google Chromecast streaming devices, Google Home smart speakers and smart TVs with built-in Chromecast technology in recent weeks by exploiting a bug that has supposedly been ignored by Google for almost five years.

The attackers managed to hijack the Chromecast feeds, This tool allows you to 'follow' certain topics and people to shape what the AI considers content of interest to the user, and display a pop-up message, spreading a security warning and the controversial propaganda of YouTube star, PewDiePie.

Curiously, Google realized the Chromecast error several times since 2014 shortly after the streaming device was launched and also acknowledged the attack, but the company decided to ignore the problem.

Users can fix this issue simply by changing their router settings, stopping port forwarding 8008, 8443 or 8009, as well as disabling its Universal Plug and Play feature (UPnP) and only reactivating it when necessary.

UPnP is enabled by default on all internet-connected devices, creating a hole in your router's security that could allow malware to infiltrate any part of your local network.
