SMEs are often in the crosshairs of cyberattacks, due to the lack of protection in most cases as reflected in a recent Barracuda Networks study. These companies are three times more likely to be attacked as they are easy prey.

The survey has been conducted on 1200 SMEs in the US and Canada. The main conclusion is that the 75% of the companies would only survive between 3 and 7 days after suffering a ransomware attack. Having fewer resources, any attack on them can be lethal.

This survey also reveals how the 30% of the surveyed companies have no incident response plan to deal with these types of threats and the companies that do, have conducted their last drill more than 6 months.

Other conclusions are that there are no offline backups available or that the 34% surveyed templates do not test susceptibility to Phishing attacks.

These conclusions should draw attention to raise awareness about good practices to protect company information.
