The National Police has warned on its Twitter profile about a new scam through WhatsApp. In it, social engineering techniques are used so that the victim agrees to pay a significant amount of money to the criminals.

The modus operandi’ is simple: pretending to be an alleged relative who has a new phone number and urgently needs a large sum of money. The criminal claims problems with the current phone number and that they cannot receive calls.

Generally, the victim profile is a woman with children. Investigators have detected this pattern in the incidents and the scams range between 2.000 and 26.000 in each case.

La Policía recomienda no perder la calma ante esta situación y recomienda hablar con el familiar en cuestión si se recibe un mensaje de este tipo. Sobretodo, nunca hacer la transferencia.
