A sophisticated cyber-espionage campaign orchestrated by the Chinese group Winnti has managed to steal information from multinational companies and go completely unnoticed since, at least, 2019.

The Israeli cybersecurity company Cybereason has managed to unmask these intellectual property theft actions. The first indications speak of hundreds of GB stolen. The targets include manufacturing companies located in East Asia, Europe and North America.

The attackers have primarily focused on obtaining victims' intellectual property including sensitive documents, blueprints, diagrams, formulas and proprietary information for manufacturing processes. Information has also been collected that could be used in the future for more cyberattacks.

The fact that Winnkit has remained completely unnoticed for so long highlights the effort that cybercriminals now put into hiding their tracks to avoid being discovered until it is too late.
