Recall is one of the new AI-powered features that the company has introduced for Windows 11, a sort of “Jiminy Cricket” that remembers the actions performed by the user through brief screenshots in order to suggest search results or other relevant information more quickly.
The move has backfired on Microsoft, and they have chosen to reduce their ambition after a series of incidents and cybersecurity breaches, including a customer data leak and a breach of U.S. government accounts.
Although this feature stores the information in the system's internal directory, it requires administrator permissions for access. A privilege escalation attack could end up accessing this restricted information, especially from those devices used in the business environment.
