WikiLeaks has published a new release of the Vault project leak series 7, intended to bring to light classified documents demonstrating the CIA's alleged electronic espionage programs.
It is a user manual describing a CIA program known as “Scribbles”. The tool allows the agency to tag and track documents created with Microsoft Office software that are leaked by informants or stolen by “foreign intelligence officers”.
According to a statement from the organization, the project is designed to allow the insertion of tags called 'web beacons'’ in those documents that are “susceptible to being stolen”.
commonly used in web analysis, the 'web beacons' tags, also known as 'web bugs', 'web beacons'’ or 'web lighthouses', are often invisibly embedded in web pages or emails to track who reads them.
This tool would allow tracking user activity, including monitoring when and where a particular document was opened.
In this way, the CIA would be able to see when a third party—potential informants included—accesses confidential documents.
