In the third quarter, Facebook removed 3 millions of posts related to terrorism, says the social network.

Facebook reports that it has been working to do a better job at finding and taking down terrorist content, the world's largest social network said it has seen signs of success.

Facebook said that in the third quarter it removed 3 millions of posts related to terrorism, a notable decrease considering the 9,4 millions of posts Facebook removed in the second quarter. The average time terrorist content remained on the platform also decreased, of 43 hours in the first quarter to 18 hours in the third quarter, the company said.

Social media is under pressure to remove terrorist content before the violence spills into the real world. However, as their efforts increase, bad actors constantly change strategies to evade detection. Some terrorists try to create new accounts or hide their messages, said Facebook.

“We can reduce the presence of terrorism on major social platforms, but eliminating it completely requires targeting the people and organizations generating this material in the real world”, said Monika Bickert, Facebook's head of global policy management, and Brian Fishman, the company's counterterrorism policy lead, wrote in a blog.
