Ransomware attacks have been increasing over the years, as well as the income that criminals have obtained thanks to paid ransoms. More and more victims agree to pay to recover their information.

These data come from an OwnBackup survey, which shows that one 79% of the respondents has suffered such an attack in the previous years 12 months. Among the respondents, three-quarters have had their operations interrupted.

Among the victims, only 14% of the organizations that have paid the ransom have recovered all of the hijacked information, while the 42% recover between half and three-quarters of the information.

Storing backups outside of production environments is a good measure to keep information safe from this type of cyberattack, but payments to criminals should also be avoided, as this encourages them to carry out more attacks.
