Volkswagen has suffered a security breach that exposed sensitive data of approximately 800,000 electric vehicles from their brands, including Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda. The compromised information included precise GPS locations, which made it possible to track the movements and parking places of the vehicles, as well as personal data of the owners, such as names and contact details.
The vulnerability originated from an incorrect configuration of the cloud storage system managed by Cariad, Volkswagen's software subsidiary. This error left accessible data without adequate protection for several months. The breach was discovered by a whistleblower who alerted the Chaos Computer Club and investigative journalists.
Volkswagen has assured that the problem was solved immediately and that there is no indication that the information has been misused. However, This incident highlights the risks associated with the collection and storage of large amounts of data by modern vehicles, and the importance of implementing robust security measures to protect such information.
